FileWorks is an online document conversion service at https://fileworks.ai. We turn PDF, Microsoft Office, images, and scans into editable Markdown for writing, coding agents, Obsidian vaults, and RAG pipelines — with optional AI reading (OCR), translation into 19 languages, and fillable Designs (family schedules, invoices, agendas, and more) — then sell monthly software subscriptions for that workspace and Convert API. We do not sell physical goods.
Goods and services
Customers upload files in the FileWorks workspace. We convert PDF, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), OpenDocument, CSV, images, scans, Markdown, and TXT into editable Markdown. Optional add-ons in the same pass: AI reading of scans and images, and translation into 19 languages. Results download as Markdown, TXT, HTML, JSON, Word (.docx), or print-ready PDF. Signed-in users can also apply fillable Designs — family planners, business documents, and custom layouts — and fill them from extracted Markdown or Design starter API variable params.
What we charge for: workspace AI page allowances (Daily and Expert) and Convert API AI page credits and keys. Default convert is included. Editor edits text on PDFs and images; finding text on scans uses the same AI page allowance. Each paid product is a monthly software subscription through Stripe. The two products can be held together.

- What file types can FileWorks convert to Markdown?
- FileWorks accepts PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OpenDocument, CSV, RTF, EPUB, PNG, JPEG, WebP, BMP, TIFF, Markdown, and TXT (up to 50 MB). Output can be Markdown, TXT, HTML, JSON, DOCX, or a print-ready PDF.
- Can FileWorks convert scanned PDFs and photos with OCR?
- Yes. Enable AI reading for image-only PDFs, phone photos of pages, and other scans. AI reading uses 1 page credit on the Convert API or your workspace AI page allowance.
- Is there a PDF to Markdown API?
- Yes. POST multipart files to /api/v1/convert with a long-lived fw_live_ API key. Examples for curl, Python, and JavaScript are on the API docs. API Free includes 1,000 standard pages and 25 AI pages / month; paid API plans start at $5/month.
- Does FileWorks translate documents?
- Yes. Optionally translate into 19 languages in the same conversion pass as PDF or office extraction. Translation shares the AI page allowance on workspace plans and uses 1 Convert API credit per page.
- Can I turn converted Markdown into invoices, schedules, or agendas?
- Yes. Choose a Design in the workspace (family daily/weekly/monthly/yearly schedules, invoices, receipts, meeting agendas, project plans, task lists, timesheets, and more). FileWorks AI-fills the Design placeholders from the extracted Markdown. Via Convert API, pass design=invoice (or another starter id) on POST /api/v1/convert.
- How much does FileWorks cost?
- Workspace Casual is free (15 conversions/day). Daily is $5/month (500 AI pages) and Expert is $29/month (5,000 AI pages). Convert is included; you pay for AI pages. Convert API Free is free; API Daily $5 and API Expert $29. You can hold a workspace role and an API plan together.
